republished from Mandala

Valentine's Day seems like an appropriate day to share this:

I am in love! and have been for nearly two years now.

Karawynn and I met over ten years ago, reconnected a little over two years ago, quickly grew friendly again, then best of friends, then intimate.
This only the second time I've met someone with whom I wanted to spend the rest of my life. I knew it early on and it is still true today, perhaps even more so.

Our story is long and not at all traditional. Last Valentine's Day, for example, was filled with flowers and gifts. The three of us were all together and the triad looked as though it was going to work. It felt as though it was working.

Boquets of tulips and roses and daffodils and carnations covered our very large dining room table, and the flowers filled the entire house with their fragrance. It was awesome, a stunning display of successful polyamory at work!

I am somewhat melancholic about it now. It seems as though the flowers and the gifts were merely a facade. A lie. Pretty on the surface, but slowly rotting underneath.

This year, Karawynn asked that I not get her flowers, only a card. I agreed. I want our love to be bare and exposed this year. Honest, self-aware, deep intimacy is what I have with her. It is wonderful and sweet and feeds my soul. It needs no dressing up.

It is beautiful naked.
